Can anybody enlighten me on exactly what kind of cards support x264 hardware acceleration?
I'm trying to set up a moderately spec'd HTPC for the living room, and being able to play .264 without hiccups is very important to me.
My 7300GT apparently doesn't support hardware accleration, as 1080p x264 material gets crazy lags in scenes with a lot of motions.

#1: just get anything in the ATI 2xxx series(other than 2900) or 3xxx series, or anything in the nVidia 8xxx series or 9xxx series.

If you're building a new computer, the 780g-based motherboards have built-in acceleration of HD video.

Thanks CW. I'm thinking Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H. It seems it can do audio over HDMI too, so this is good stuff.
I haven't built a computer in over 2 years, so I didn't even know that computers can now output HDMI audio, too..

Microcenter.com has the evga 8800gt for $170 AR ($35 I think). Lowest I've seen so far.

What is a good processor to slap in the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H for a HTPC?

Save your money and get a 3850 which has more than enough for HTPC. This 3850 is only $103: Sapphire 100226L HD 3850 512MB for $103 (after rebate) http://bensbargains.net/deal/65031/
The only reason to get a 3870 for a HTPC would be if your also going to part time game with it.

yeah, that's a good motherboard. I just built a computer around it for a friend, and that motherboard is great for overclocking.

well, that depends upon your budget. I just put in a cheap AMD X2 4200+ CPU and clocked it up a bit. It was really cheap, and plenty fast enough for what that computer was going to be used for.

Since it was a HTPC and going to be on 24/7 I went with a 45W AMD Dual Core. Not sure the extra $ for the low energy saving 45W was worth it in energy savings but it's doing the job just fine. And the Dual Core for a little future proofing.

    There are new models now, but I'm running this one: AMD Athlon X2 BE-2400 Brisbane 2.3GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 45W Dual-Core Processor.

    For 1/2 the $ you could get this: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.7GHz 2 x 512KB L2
