97.3% of people don't need anywhere near 1 TB. Why spend the extra $90?

97.2% of people don't need anywhere near 500 GB. Why spend $100 for something to store stuff you probably should be deleting?

And BTW, $100 for 500 GB is not a bargain - it's normal street price. Take your pick:

I picked up two of the 7200.11s from ClubIT for $195 total. I was upgrading from IDE/PATA to SATA, which itself makes no difference in performance, so I figured I would move up from 300 to 500 to make it worthwhile (though the $50 300 GB drives offer more space per dollar).

Just a point a clarification. I picked up one of these today at the local Best Buy. It was a ST3500630AS which is a 7200.10 perpendicular drive, which is different than what Ben indicated above. Worked great for me. Just remember to take off the 1.5Gb/s limit strap.

I believe 7200.10 is parallel, not perpendicular. And the jumper doesn't matter when the drive speed is already far below the SATA 1 threshold. My NVIDIA tester says the "theoretical limit" is 150 MB/s with the jumper and 300 MB/s without, while the drive's sustained speed is around 115 or less anyway.

Not a deal at all. If the price is below $79 then it is a deal....

#8. Yes, the 7200.10 is 1st generation perpendicular. The 7200.11 is 2nd generation. The 7200.9 is the last generation for parallel. And the strap makes a MAJOR difference. With the strap in, I get 108 MB/s, and with the strap out, I get 238 MB/s. These are burst rates. The average read/write rates are also impacted as well.
