The Maxtor was a better deal. Not only was it $10 cheaper, but more importantly, it was an enterprise drive - built to last longer.

#8, Buffalo likes to use Western Digital, so most likely it's that WD.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9, I wouldn't touch them (nor the 7200.8 ), only 7200.7 and latest 7200.10. As far as external v. internal, you don't know what you're getting in an external.

But don't knock WD. They have a couple of good 320GB and 500GB models, although their 400GB series left much to be desired in thermals/acoustics.

#8, I think Buffalo'b been using Samsungs on the SATA enclosures. I just got a 250Gig version and that's what it came with, somebody else in a forum said that's what was in his too. Samsung's not my first choice, but my 250 was only $70 after 30 rebate and Buffalo enclosures tend to be better than the average no names I've used. Plus it powers down automatically when the computer's off, and comes with some software that might be useful to some people. But if you want a five year warranty, you'll have to get the Seagate internal. BTW Seagate Externals only come with one year mfg warranty, not five like their internals.

i would check the length of the warrany when buying an external drive.
