mostly bad reviews, low ratings. pass
Nice to finally see a 2TB at $100
in for 1 to round out the 8tb drobo

Pass, because Newegg reviewers are not biased and so extremely knowledgeable and experienced that you should trust customer reviews. Right?
It's a 2TB drive -- there are similar problems with other drives. The problem being customer education of general computer care/policies.
For those who order this drive, please report back and tell us how they're packaged AND what condition the package is in when you get it.
The most important factor that I care about is how is the drive packaged.
It's a small heavy item that will be dropped probably several times before you get it.
#6, they seem to come from multiple warehouses so packing may vary. The last I bare Seagate I received was reasonably double-wrapped in large bubble, bubble wrap and laid on the bottom of the oversized box, then about 10 feet of packing paper wadded up on top of it... same packing as some I've had running fine for several months, though they weren't the 2TB version.
That's also how they ship OEM optical drives to me if I don't buy enough that they send them in the original foam partitioned bulk padding they started out in.
one reviewer noted that some of the problems were due to underpowered power supplies. Seems like this drive doesn't like to see voltage sags. It's like the proverbial canary in the coal mine... while it's inconvenient that the drive is more sensitive to voltage sags, it serves as a warning that the rest of the system may suffer problems from the inadequate power.
There *are* an awful lot of bad reports about virtually all the OEM drives on NewEgg. I've assumed the most likely problem with the drives was handling, which, of course includes packaging.
dave_c, how many OEMs have you ordered and what kind of life have you gotten from them?
Because HD prices have dropped so significantly and the time involved to back up a storage drive is considerable, I figured that I'd start buying the enterprise drives. Even though they're more expensive to begin with, the time saved from screwing with problems makes them cheaper in the long run.
You've been on here a long while and seem to be pretty knowledgeable. Do you know why formatting is no longer recommended (that's what I've been told) and if formatting is wise anyway?
dave_c, how many OEMs have you ordered and what kind of life have you gotten from them?
Generally they are either DOA (about 5%), last less than 2 years (about 10%, maybe 8% of which fail in the first 6 months ) and 85% last longer than I expect them to (over 5 years with a very tiny percentage failing between year 2 and 5), BUT I have never received what some report, that it was just a bare drive in the metalized bag laying directly on the bottom of the shipping box. The worse I ever received was one with only a single layer of small-bubble bubble wrap then in a card-sized whitebox, then lying on the bottom of the shipping box.
I don't really order enough drives for the above to be considered a good sample size, and I don't generally buy 4 platter drives as I've always had higher failure rates the more platters were used.
Showed in uneven, popped bubblewrap, in a cardboard box, packed with some brown paper on a single side, inside another cardboard shipping box. The popped bubblewrap means it probably got rocked and rattled a few times en route.
EDIT:
ran the drive through HDD Regenerator and it appears to be fine. started the drobo integration.. 87 hours remaining
