great drive.. my local tigerdirect had these for 39.99
I woke up this past Sunday, turned on my computer, and was greeted with "invalid boot disk". My few-months-old Seagate 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB SATA drive was no longer being recognized by my PC. No warning, no nothing, just a dead drive. It's the dreaded firmware SD15 bug where the drive's firmware corrupts and leaves the drive inaccessible. I had recently backed up My Documents and email and a few other things, but still lost some stuff that is irreplaceable. It sucks @$$, but the drive is fully recoverable if I want to spend the $$.
#2 Except it will cost you more than ten times the cost of the hard drive to get the data replaced...
I bought one 11 months ago and it just crashed yesterday. It was always noisy and sounded a lot like a blender from the start. I never had any problems with Seagate before this but I would avoid this 500gb '2nd generation' crap.
#3, I realize that. Drive replacement will be free since it is still under warranty.
#4, my drive was never loud. It died a silent death.
I got a guy in Vancouver BC to fix mine for $70 - they replaced the board, flashed the new board's rom with the old firmware and sent it back, been working fine since then. I had all the data still on the drive when it was returned. I found these guys on Ebay:

#6, thanks for the info. That sounds like the exact repair that I need. Was your drive a Seagate 7200.11?
Check with www.resellerratings.com GoHarDrive shows only one review, and it's not a good one.
Looks like a good deal price-wise. but I wouldn't trust this site...

#9, these guys are rumored to be the same as EagleBit.com, which had a horrific reputation in these forums, and fairly bad at resellerratings.com.
I've never seen anything definitive on them being the same outfit, but they use the same mailing list (people on EagleBit's old mail list started getting mail from goharddrive), and I do see references to the EagleBit eBay store having you write checks out to goHardDrive.com, so I think we can safely say they are effectively the same vendor.
I like Seagates, but pass on this one.
yawn. price is good, not great.
