lets say you can get a 16MB cache drive for 80, or this for 87? Is there enough (any?) real world benefit to having 32 cache?
It depends on what you are doing. Cache only works at all when retrieving data that has already been accessed, and thus is contained within the cache. So on some database type operations, where you are doing this type of function, more cache is beneficial.
However, it won't do much when your surfing pron, so will likely not help you much.
I pickup up the 750Gb 16Mb cache version at fry's b&m today for $110 instead.
I have this drive and am happy with it. It's quick and quiet. Check the firmware when you get it with Sea tools. Some of them shipped with an old firmware that caused a performance hit. Mine shipped with the latest firmware.
This is an ok price.
If the drive is being used for just storing porn, 16mb v 32mb ...hmmm....
same drive $85.44 shipped at excaliberpc:

The prices on drives are dropping loke a rock!

I'll save you the trouble... get a Hitachi if you want faster, et a F1 Spinpoint if you want quieter. If you want, eh.. but fall into marketing schemes like a 5yr warranty vs 3, then get this.
#11, actually, aren't Spinpoints faster than the Deskstars?
I thought that was the case, at least for the 1tb drives.
BTW, I have two Hitachi 1tb's, and they're LOUD & HOT.
...fast as hell though. I love'em
