Seagate's latest 2nd generation perpendicular drive: NewEgg.com has the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3750330AS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive for $170 with free shipping. Covered by Seagate's 5-Year Warranty.
#5 Not so sure about the cool part. I got a WD 750 drive a couple of weeks ago. It gets much hotter than the four other older, smaller drives I have. I found out how hot after initially formatting it in the case and then moving it to an Antec e-SATA enclosure. The enclosure has a fan so I am not concerned with the heat. It works fine as a secondary drive.
#5 Well, That W-D is nice, but for less than a Jackson you'll get 2 more years on the warranty... This is a fairly resent comparison covering 7200.11 offerings in depth, and bested last generation(s). I would say this Barracuda H-D is quite and generates less heat. They're very competitive at .22/Gb (no rebates) and worth getting. http://techreport.com/articles.x/13440
this is a good deal, I think for the most part. the smaller cache does not make that big of a difference. Some say that is help when streaming HD videos over a network. I am currently running a 320gb with 16mb cache over my 100mbs network and I have no problems.
#13 - Oh but with 32mb you'll have less than no problems! Thats right, random completely unrelated problems in your life will start to disapear...either that or the drive will grant you three wishes. ^.^
I have two WD 500 drives, both died within 6 months. One was DOA and the other one died within 6 months and they don't honor their warranty and customer support's response time is ridiculously slow. I'm NEVER going to buy another Western Digital hard drive.

you can get the 750 gb free agent for 2 dollars more, granted it is not as fast.
Fry's Electronics in the SF bay area have them on sale for only $149.99 in their Friday ad.
Correction - 16MB Cache, not 32. And have both PATA and SATA/300 versions.
WTF? This doesn't seem like a very good deal for a 32MB drive. *smirk*
Another good alternative is Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB. Tomshardware recordholder. Runs fast cool and quiet.

#2, The drives at Frys are the older 7200.10 models.
Do I care about that #6? I'm fine with the 16MB cache. Is there some other significant reason to get the new model?
@ #7 fewer platters

To get an advanced warranty replacement from Seagate, they now charge you $20.
As with any new or used drive, download and run the diagnostic utility from the drive mfr website. Do a complete test including full media scan.
Why did they not honor their warranty?
Because #16 opened up the drives to let the blue smoke out
you can get the 750 gb free agent for 2 dollars more
Hey, can you really get the 750 gb free agent for 2 dollars more?
