Newegg has the Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS 1TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive with Rosewill Hard Drive Dock for $80 with free shipping. Good reviews from Newegg users.

sounds like a good deal since a dock is around 20-30.

do you have to format these drives inside a computer before using them externally? I tried a sata drive fresh out of the box and it didnt work on a usb-sata cable. it said sata does not have the master/slave drive jumper.

You should be able to format a SATA drive connected via USB - you might have an incompatibility problem with your USB to SATA cable. Get a cheap USB enclosure and try it that way.

I bought the Newegg combo last week which was a Samsung 1tb plus this Rosewell USB dock. Arrived today. I've got the drive in the dock and Windows XP sees it fine. Partitioned it and it's formatting right now.

In general, you don't have to format it inside a pc. Just plug this combination into a USB port of a pc. The pc won't recognize the drive at first. You need to first initialize it, then format it using Windows adminstration -> computer management -> disk management tool.

What's the warranty on this? I thought Seagate went to 3-year, but their site says 5 year for this model. However, ZipZoomFly only says 2 years for the OEM, and NewEgg says nothing.

I ordered this last week. i just got it today, and hooked it up in a couple of minutes. No issues. You just need to mount the drive and create partitions before you can use it.

I am so happy with this deal, I ordered another one today. Awesome deal!

#1 This is a good deal, I got this HD for 80 buck last month with no docking bought 4 all works very nice, Yes the docking is worth 40 bucks Retail, But it only worth 20 to 25 buck street vaule. Samsung offfer the same deal last week for 72 bucks shiped. But! that deals come's only once in a long while because of the promotion coupons code 10% off. supprize they ship it in two box..

Yes, You have to format before using. #5 got it correctly.. If you not sure, here the step by step how to do it very easy. Point your mouse to a icon call (my computer) or Computer right click it, look for (Manage) left click it and select Disk Management and click on that you will see all the drive on your C: Hard drive. Now if you use this docking station, it should read it as H,I,J,K or someletter. Point at the letter that shaded black and white and right click it and format, do a quick format to save time.. Make sure you don't format your c: drive, you can select any Alpha you want but not C if you put it in your computer after format it will see it as C drive and nothing else unless you few hard drive using as RAIDS, then there another way. You also mention, It will not recognize your HD, Pull the USB out and in a few times, each times give it a minutes or two, if still don't recognize. try it on the back of the computer. Forget about the jumpers, I remove all mine so I get 3gb

This comment makes no sense. If your computer has e-sata, why would you even need the dock? Not to mention that USB 2.0 is far more ubiquitous than e-sata.

#5's suggestion is as painless as it gets. The drive will be detected by the disk management tool, and you'll just need to look for it listed as a bar towards the bottom with no drive letter and it will also say "unallocated space." Simply right click on it to assign a letter and format it using NTFS. Pretty simple.

#13, good point, I must have been tired to miss that. I have esata so I am not interested in a usb only dock. with the esata kit that comes with the calvalry external 1gb it looks like it would be easy to add an esata port to most computers. although I havent tried it myself, the idea of running an sata drive through usb seems like a bottleneck if you can use esata instead.

#15, what are you suggesting? I have an esata port. do you run sata drives bare on your desk with no dock or enclosure? do you need a plug in power supply or is the drive power provided through the esata cable?
