Prices are coming down - however so is the warranty period. 1 year parts and labor, what happened to you Seagate?

It's a duopoly now. You're bent over, no other choice, that are raping you. What are you going to do about it other than take it?

Good drive. I picked up 2 when they were on sale for $150 a few months back, and they've been running great. Quiet, fast, and cool. I opted for an extended warranty as I wasn't thrilled with the 1 year either.

You know, I can't really say that I ever had a Seagate die on me. I've only ran across one failure ever, and that was a WD drive out of one of their MyBook external units.

I've had failures with all brands. Maxtor, WD, Seagate, Hitachi, Fujitsu... It's just the nature of this technology to be failure prone. It's actually surprising that it can be made to be this reliable, considering the mechanical constraints and the low price. I have learned the hard way to expect failures and prepare for them -- but a 1 year warranty is a very bad sign indeed. It really goes to show how little confidence the manufacturer has in its product. I wouldn't buy this drive.

luck of the draw for all drives. Plus, we have all seen this warranty thing happen. One company is going to start upping the warranty from one year to three years. I have a few seagates that are one year and a few with a three year (all purchased around the same time).

You guys can always buy an SAS enterprise drive for twice the price, twice the speed, and at least 3x the warranty. They're the most reliable class of HD mech bacon there is.
I've had 8 of them in raid 6 for over 4 years now. No problems except one gets a read error every couple of months. I got them with 5 year warranty and they're seagates.

SAS comes with more features as well.

Had to replace 3 SAS Barracuda drives on one of the servers... Mechanical drives will fail -it's just a matter of time

Longer warranties have a "value" to them to the manufacturer, based on the odds of the thing dying, the cost of replacement, etc. Think Fight Club and the recalls. It's the same as a manufacturer not including a power cable or manual, those things cost money, and every dollar saved can go into someone's pocket, either yours through reduced prices or the manufacturer's through increased profits.

Reduced warranties don't demonstrate a lack of confidence in a product, they demonstrate that you aren't willing to pay this price +$20 for a hard drive with a five year warranty, as well as that Seagate isn't willing to accept a lower profit margin on their drives. If you disagree, and are willing to pay more for a longer warranty, hit up Squaretrade, they'll insure a $135 brand new storage device for $21, even before the 30% off coupons they send me like every day.

Or, you know, just bitch about it.
