Newegg has the Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB SATA3 HDD for $170 - $20 off with coupon code EMCYTZT1702 [Exp 6/5] = $150 with free shipping. Features a SATA 6Gb/s interface, 64MB cache, and 7200RPM.
Meh. Going rate not really a deal. $157 at Amazon is better if you're in a Newegg tax zone, plus everyone knows Amazon's return policy slays worlds. With Newegg you're having to hassle with talking to customer service if you want to avoid restock fees on returns.
As to the Amazon sourcing, I'm starting to get concerned about the MANY reports of drives from Amazon 'packaged' by placing a raw drive in a box with some airbags. Anybody have experience?
#1 Comments about what's better due to taxed vs not taxed are just a waste of everyone's time. They'll buy per their total bill, not yours. Here, Amazon taxes and Newegg does not. Desperate and in for one. Thanks Ben.
#1, with Newegg you don't have to talk to anyone. They have an automated return system you can use to set up a return via their website. Further, Amazon charges taxes in more states than Newegg does and that number seems to be growing still.
Regarding packaging, both merchants have had issues packing drives properly. I suppose that's what happens when warehouse people aren't properly trained or paid too little to give a hoot but even then, it still depends on whether the UPS people that handle it are gentle.
The last OEM drive I bought (Newegg) came in a special drive shipping box (static bag, and plastic drive end caps) quite safe. As far as prices go, I don't think they will ever go back down as the desktop PC is a dying breed. Laptops and tablets don't use those big desktop drives, even the XBOX uses small capacity drives.
