I know that there are people who insist on having the newest and best but I'm not sure why someone would buy something like this when you could probably get two 1.5TB drives for close to the same price. I'm pretty sure I've seen the external 1.5TB drives in the $120-130 range.

Whatever it is, I think 1TB is about as big as I'm ever gonna buy. (It'll be awesome the day 2.5" 1TBs hit 50 bucks or so... 2-3 years from now... right? right??)

Not because I don't need the space... 1TB is a MAJOR pain to replicate as it is. I don't even wanna think of the joy I'll have when a 20GB flames out, let alone 2TB.

I'd rather spread my precious bounty around.

    no eSata no deal

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2173844,00.asp

also the next page in that article shows how poorly eSata versions of WD and Seagate perform vs other "lesser" brands like Cavalry, etc.

Now that I think about it why not just get the dual 1.5TB bare drive deal from Dell for $200 and then buy two external enclosures that include eSATA? I just picked up a Vantec unit with USB 2.0 and eSATA for $25 from MicroCenter. Admittedly that enclosure does not include a fan...

$250? They think there are plenty of people too rich or not familiar with the current HD pricings and will buy this?

Let's see you put a 2TB file on two 1.5TB drives.

Yeah, sure. And double your chance of critical hardware failure. No thanks, noob.

I think you need eSATA to reasonably deal with drives this large (assuming you are doing stuff that needs drives this large). I work with a lot of medical imaging which can take up this much space but I've stopped trying to fill up or back up these huge storage devices over USB.
