TigerDirect.com has the Seagate Momentus 320GB 2.5" 7200.3 ST9320421AS Hard Drive for Notebooks priced at $80 + $7 shipping = $87 shipped. A good upgrade to tide you over to the days of SSD affordability. Here is the Seagate site for this drive.

The Hitachi equivalent (slightly faster, actually) is $65 plus $7 shipping AR on the same site. I ordered one of those instead. I've had no problems with Hitachi Travelstar drives over the years.

I've never had any issues with TD. I have over 5 orders from them. Yet, I have not purchased from them in over a year because of all the bad feedback.
Is that still the case with these guys?

Years ago TD got a bad rep for several reasons, most (if not all) seem to have been corrected. I have ordered a few things from them (computer parts, AV equipment) and received them quickly, no problems with billing, even received my rebates quickly (within a few weeks). Anyone can have a bad experience with any merchant, the better merchants will try to make it right. Do a bit of research before giving away your money to improve your chances. Just be nice and most problems can be resolved. Still have problems? Know when to let go. Let them know politely that you are taking your money elsewhere. Find a good merchant? Let them know and continue buying from them. I have and a few sent extra coupons or discounts. I thanked them for that too because I knew they did not have to do that.

Oh yeah, a cheaper price does NOT automatically mean a better deal! TRUTH!

I told TD I would take my money elsewhere after denying a valid rebate. Never again.

Wow good price. There should be 500gb 7200rpm 2.5"s very soon - at least you'd think so with 320gb pricing like this

Anyone have any history with this drive? Does it get hotter that other 2.5s? Any thoughts on reliability? And would it be better to wait till I can find a 32mb version...will speed difference be noticable vs. this 16mb with my 2.16 dual core and 3gb RAM Studio 1535?

Thx for any help Very Happy

Techrecycler, depends on what drive you currently have. Large buffer would help sequential read/write in large transfers. Overall performance would be good too if you are moving from a smaller drives like 60-120GB/7200 as the data density per platter is much higher in these high capacity drives.

But, if you are moving from a 250GB/7200RPM/16MB, I don't think you'd really notice anything. 2.5" HDD prices have come a long way, I just wish those Intel/Samsung SSDs would take a note too ... in a year may be ...

TD's reputation was not one bourne of the "anyone can have a bad day" sort of thing. It was constructed of changing prices, bait and switch deals, valid rebate rejections, and a series of consistent bad bahvior seen at such a high rate that they, for quite a period of time, had perhaps the worst reputation on the web.

Have they improved? The jury would seem to say yes they have - BUT, consider this like the kid that scored a 4% on their mid-term. "Improved" doesn't really tell you anything about whether they are "doing well" or not.

For me personally, Tiger Direct and eCost fit into that "I don't care how good the deal sounds, the track record is so set in stone that it's not worth the risk". I *might* purchase something that was free from them - assuming I didn't have to give them a credit card for guarantee or anything....
