Wouldn't the 1.5 TB at TigerDirect be a better deal?

Yes, there's a rebate but the company that does the processing (4myrebate.com) is actually very good based on my own experiences with over 20 rebates going through them so far, all with success.

The TD deal is $50 for a 5900 RPM 1.5 TB drive
This deal is for a 7200 RPM 0.5 TB drive

Yes, I should've add the caveats, 7200Rpm and No Rebate! Just a straight-up new entry build HDD at $50 has been a long time coming, still not great but it's getting there.

There are a couple of advantages to a single platter drive.

    1) Less heat and mechanical wear on the motor.

    2) In case of electrical or mechanical failure a single platter drive can have the platter swapped into another of the same drive. With dual platter drives you'd have to keep precise platter alignment which isn't something the average tech can do.
