These sound great when connected to the computer.

However, when listening to my iPod Touch (thanks again, Ben), the sound quality is noticeably crappier. My guess is that the iPod Touch does not supply enough juice to power these headphones. So, I don't know about these for portable use (they're big anyways).

Obviously it's worse when you use a portable without an amp...

Even though these sound just fine with a portable, they push really nicely with a mini amp. This is really a good deal. You can just send any piece of crap headphones that you've got lying around and they will send you back $30, making the price on these headphones really good.

Great set of headphones and that price is unbeatable if you can take advantage of the rebate. They bump really well, but they are open-air - so if you are in public you'd be sharing your music collection with those around you.

yep, these are some good cans. i have the 600 w/ amp. they rock.
open air is cool for home use,so you can hear the phone ring and what not. maybe in public you can hear a bus coming....?

i doubt portables can push these convincingly though.

If I were to shell out about this much, I would get sets that do not disturb those around you, and have better noise canceling.

Noise cancellation and privacy have their place, but the odds are, that those other sets that do provide noise cancellation, won't be able to compete with these as far as overall sound quality. I recently tried some Bose Tri port on ear headphones, which are sealed and provide some natural noise cancellation and they simply could not keep up with these Sennheisers. These HD 555's are considerably clearer, with a wider frequency response. However, I should note that they produce less bass than the Bose do. If you want ear thumping bass, then go Bose or something else. If you want unbelievable clarity and superior overall sound quality, then you can't really beat these Sennheisers. They are a great deal, even at their normal retail price.
