I've heard noise cancelling what other sound does this isolate??
I bought these the last time this deal was offered for $69. I wear them on the 'L' to work and depending on how loud you like your music I can barely hear any of the noise from the train. When I wear them at work they're even better. Overall a nice set of phones for a decent price.
#1, noise cancelling usually refers to those that actively cancelling out those airplane/subway noises by using a device running on battery. As for sound isolation, it's more like passive noise cancelling, by fitting the headphone snug into your ears to block the noises out.
Personally, the noise isolation headphones are better because they do plug your ears up from all outside noises. As for those active noise cancelling headphones, most cheapy ones especially, do cancel plane/subway noises but not other noises like conversations from the people next to you or baby crying.
The only draw with some of the noise isolation headphones at the moment is that sometime you feel like you hear yourself breathing and touching the headphone cable can produce noises. Noise isolation is not really meant for jogging.
I think it was egghead where I got Sennheiser CX300s for $30 and a $15 rebate for sending in any old crap headphone, working or not.
I wear them to bed as I fall asleep to the drone of a portable radio that shuts off in an hour. The Shure stick out a lot farther and are uncomfortable to wear while trying to sleep.
I don't think the sound was any better on the Shure units that were about a hundred dollars than the CX300s for a net price of $15.
Etymotic makes the 6i that goes way deep into your ear and cuts off almost all sound but the wires get stiff as a board and there is no customer service response to a complaint.
Spend what you want, but for $30 minus the cost of mailing in any kind of old nothing crap headset to get $15 back, you can't beat the Sennheiser CX300.
Weird to hear yourself chew and breath and other stuff when having this in your ear.
I thought it was the new Nike Sasquatch driver at first glance. Wicked!

The sound these headphones isolate is low pitched farting, around 20 Hz. That way you can point out which fat guy on the elevator let one rip.
