Newegg has the SiliconDust HDHomeRun Network-based Single Digital HDTV Tuner HDHR-T1-US Ethernet Interface for $75 with free shipping. This single tuner solution plugs into your network and lets you receive both over the air and unencrypted content from your cable company.

Just to reiterate the unencrypted content comment. For many cable systems that typically means what you can get over the air. Check with your cable company BEFORE assuming what you can receive with this.

If I attach this to my LAN with an antenna I can get OTA HDTV, but is there any way to display it on an older 1080i 42" HDTV monitor w/o a builtin tuner?

#3 - You will need a computer hooked to it. Load Mythbuntu or similar software on it and use as a DVR.

If you just want a tuner for HD content, you need something different. Tuner that puts out 480i is about $50.

Presumably this won't work with a Dish network signal either because each receiver has a coded card.

Yes this appears to be ATSC, over-the-air tuner so you can watch local broadcast.

It works with ATSC (broadcast) and QAM (cable), but both have to be unencrypted. Will not do anything with Dish, DTV, or encrypted cable.

Whatever you can get with a HDTV tuner connected directly to the cable is what you will get with this.
