Well I know everyone hates sony.. But this sony ericsson X1 phone seems on par with the iphone..
The problem with the the HTC Touch HD and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 are that they use Windows Mobile. Anyone who has ever used Windows Mobile for a while will tell you how bad it is.
The T-Mobile G1 still has a way to go to reach the iPhone's level of polish. Also, the fact that everything on the phone is so closely tied to Google's online services may be a turn off for some.
As quite a few others have said, currently, there really isn't anything out there that can compete with the iPhone.
Lastly, it makes absolutely no sense to try to use a T-Mobile US SIM on an iPhone 3G because T-Mobile's 3G network will not work on the iPhone 3G. This would essentially turn the iPhone 3G in to a 1st gen iPhone.
I'm sold on the G1:

Street view is awesome... move the phone to move the camera view (toward the end of the video)
GOOGLE WILL RULE ALL!! No seriously, does anyone else find it amazing that a search engine is making both Microsoft and Apple baconnaise themselves? Right now I'm cruising on Chrome wishing I could buy the HTC Dream(Google phone) really wishing they'd release an OS already.
The BlackBerry Storm looks to be a seriour alt to the iPhone, at least for people who have jobs. If I were a teeny bopper, abercrombie wearing, non-shaving preppy, iphone all the way.
(don't get me wrong...I have the itouch and I consider it one of the top 5 pieces of electronics in my house).
I don't buy a phone with battery I cannot replace myself. Nor am I interested in a phone whose OS is locked down and there are no 3rd party providers of software (just changed, or soon to be changed for Apple, but not soon enough).
I got an ATT Tilt. Upgraded to WM 6.1, and I think it has just passed the threshhold for my tolerating its design. It works, syncs, has 3rd party software (spbsoftwarehouse is awesome) has a big querty keyboard, and is rock solid (after WM6.1).
My next phone MIGHT be an iPhone IF they 3rd parties are writing software for it, and IF I can swap batteries for it.
Now, the fact that there are all these vendors selling PDAs is just dandy, 'cause competitive capitalism between them (and not soc-ial-ist Democratic government) will spur them to innovate and give this consumer some great choices in a year or two.
and W-The-F Ben? You twist 'soc-ial-ist' to 'sobacont'. You working for ABCNews?
And did Borat do the writeup on this thing?!
The title at HandHeldItems is "Gevey Sim Card Chip For Unlock iPhone 3G"
Maybe it should be Slave Labor Happy Chip For Make Benefit Glorious People of Conquered Tibet.
i've been playing around with the android sdk and it's pretty sweet. granted, the initial phone android is coming out on isn't that amazing, but hopefully in the future it will appear on better phones like the HTC touch HD. 800 x 480 of goodness =)
but yeah, there's no point in bashing/debating/defending any company/phone. just go for what works best for you. some people are power users and some are just casual users. not everyone is the same so I would refrain from telling people what to do because chances are they are very different from you.
I think google phone is better. anyway, this unlocking sim is pretty handy.
