Based on my experience with four different installations of these, if it works, you will love it. If at any point you have a problem, it is trashed.
I had one working for years then I upgraded the router. It took hours to get it working again. Sling offered help, .....for a price....$$$$$
I had a friend that couldn't get one to work. I brought it to my system and managed to get it wroking fine. I tried to re-install it on his system and could not get it to work. Even though he had another slingbox working on his system just like I did on mine.

If you have a shoddy connection these things would eat up all your bandwidth so whoever is on your network where these are installed would be at a snails pace. I think if you have less than a 1mbps upload speed these things would pretty much chew up your network.
Sounds like I'd be slinging these towards the trash can.
#1's issue sounds like there are problems with other hardware or his own wetware.
I defected to Monsoon. Easier to setup and better features like more than 1 remote viewer and DVR function.
