I think this is the model I have, and I use it ALL the time. Either for just plain club soda or for soda that I don't keep around but like on occasion, such as ginger ale, tonic, or "energy" (Red Bull) for drinks.
The refills are pretty cheap and convenient if you live near a Bed Bath and Beyond or a Kohl's. I think other places will do a swap for your empties too, but I've always just done one of those.
Somehow I cannot place the order, probably it's OOS? Too bad, I was missing this type of fizz machine. By the way, it's not a new invention, it is widely used in the part of the world where I came from, what's new is the Sodastream brand.
Soda Stream has been around for at least 11 years, because I bought one that long ago. I bought this because it was time for a new one, even though the old one still works. Will use it as a spare.
My grandparents had a soda carbonation device that used metal CO2 cartridges. I grabbed the empty cartridges, filled them with match heads and launched them from a sturdy iron pipe. I still have all my fingers and both eyes.
Got one of these a couple years ago. They're GREAT, if you can get past their cheesy infomercials. Although they don't recommend it, you can actually carbonate juices directly (apple juice works great). If you do that, just be careful when removing the bottle. You have to wait and depressurize it slowly first, else it'll foam and make a mess. I get exchange cartridges at local BB&Beyond for $10 with their $5 coupons.

When is some mega soda bottler going to buy this company out and pull this product from the market?

We used to do that too when we were kids!
