Amazon has the Philips Sonicare HX5610 Essence 5600 Rechargeable Toothbrush for $38 with free shipping. Normally around $65. Includes battery handle, charger base and travel case. Walmart has it for the same price with free in-store pickup or $1 shipping.
This is now the base model and the old style which I have owned 2 and paid closer to $100 for each one. They worked great, however, my stopped working after I left them unplugged for about 2 weeks, one time while on vacation, the other when moving homes. When I plugged them back in to charge they never took the charge, even borrowed a friends of mine charger just to check and still DOA. So if you get this model just make sure you keep it on the charger and charging at all times, if you leave it off for 2 weeks or so it will not work, just a heads up, but its a good strong unit.
^ Sometimes chargers are too smart for their own good and will refuse to charge a cell if its voltage has dropped below a certain threshold. When this happens in some cases you can use an old wall wart (strip the ends after cutting the plug off, or of course any DC supply with higher voltage than the battery pack needs) to get some current into the cell to raise its voltage enough to start using the charger again.
You'll also need a multimeter to determine the polarity of the charger contacts.
My headline will read "Man Electrocuted to Death Trying to Repair His $40 Electric Toothbrush" LOL....but i agree with you and it was frustrating and past any return periods for the units.
