The NEX is not an SLR. It's a compact mirrorless interchangeable lense camera with a large (APS-C) sensor. Its few available controls (few buttons, no dials) do not do justice to the capable hardware.
I messed around with this briefly at the store and thought that it had on-screen touch control interface in addition to the limited button count....could be mistaken since I played around with a number of cameras that day.
I have the NEX 5. Am not sure what the difference is between the two, but the NEX5 is quite a decent little camera if a bit pricy.
With the NEX cameras you can, with an adapter go with Nikon, Minolta or even Leica or Ziess lenses although limited to manual focus.
While not perfect, I think Sony have opened up a nice little niche for the APS sized sensor.
