The further the designs of their DSLRs moved away from Minolta-based designs the more innovative they've become. Their cameras used to always come up short on dpreview.com but they seem to have redeemed themselves since then.
I have an A65, it is a slt = single lens translucent just like this A55. Basically the mirror doesn't flip up like a regular dslr. Advantage of this would be fast fps and full time phase detection autofocus in live view and in video mode (awesome). Disadvantage would be you're losing 1/3 stops of light since the mirror is always in the way, also have to deal with the EVF which is horrible in low light and pretty bad when you need to grab quick shot. The EVF on the A55 is also lower res compare to the A65.
The " 2010 camera of the year. " is selected by Popular Photography. Sony is great to find it's own way to fight Canon / Nikon. Besides high burst rate- Sony is also the 1st to build IS function into the body -- consumer have more choice not been locked by these 2 major players.
@hOtsauce. For what its worth Wolf camera highly recommended the A-65 as an entry point for this class of camera (but it is about $150-200 more compared to canonT3i/nikonD5100). Said too many trade offs per price with the A-55.
2010 camera of the year. if you want 10FPS burst, you'll be dropping $5K for a Mark II canon.
I noticed Sony always have fast burst mode for dirt cheap. On Canon's at this price, you can only get 3-4fps.
