HD DVD > Blu-Ray
I don't understand, Ben. What do you mean "refurbished" here with different prices?
6 > 7
.mkv > Blu-ray
This is an excellent deal! A standalone Blu-Ray player is a much better and more flexible option than a PS3. Thanks Ben!
At these prices it's worth getting a full fledged entertainment PC with tuner card, DVR software and blu-ray drive. It's a hell of a lot more money but it's also a lot more future-proof.
Sony has no reason to start dropping prices on these because HD-DVD is no longer around. Just think what would happen to processor chips, or video cards if AMD/ATI went out of business.
This thing is a POS. Try their new model or the ES series if you want something better.
#7 high speed internet and cheap hard drives will take them down in the near future. All of the plastic discs are dead, they just haven't gotten the memo.
this price is horrible, I would rather get a ps3
I dare someone to buy this.
Make it $50 and people will buy. What the hell are they waiting for?
Why would anyone get a stand alone player vs a PS3 for a player?
#13, the only reason I know of is that the PS3 does not have an IR receiver, so you can't use a Harmony remote to control it.
i shove this thing up my butt regularly
$325 for refurbished? Sony is full of it.
#16 - read this again you knob.. its $270 for refurbished.
Mofo is at it again.. talking out his herpes ridden ass... the PS3 has more to offer than a stand alone player, plus firmware updates are faster and easier. Cant play divx files on your stand alone player.
So that you can use it with a universal remote. The PS3 doesn't have IR.
Most of the people who bought the PS2 as a dvd player immediately bought the PS2 remote, plugged the one end in, and then set up their universal to run it. The PS3 remote ($20 on Amazon) is bluetooth.
The only way to use a universal remote with the PS3 is to buy a PS2 controller -> USB converter, and then use it with the PS2 remote.
The other possible downside to the PS3 is audio. If you use fiber-optic connections with the PS3, then you have to settle for lossy compression for the audio. The only way to get lossless audio is over HDMI, but HDMI-capable audio receivers aren't yet commonplace.
Does anyone know if this thing supports BD 1.1? Will it be upgradable to Blu-Ray 2.0 like the PS3 is? When I click specifications on the Sony page, I just get a 404.
Right, the audio compression codecs for certain things like stated above are the downside to PS3. I don't have any of the super fancy audio setups where it matters though, and i suspect most don't or could care less.
I have the PS3 remote and it works fine (bluetooth)
I get a big laugh out of how many haters there are out there...so many people who are either bitter that HDDVD lost the battle or those who think digital downloads will eventually take over. It's the game of format, so know the saying "don't hate the player, hate the game". Blu-ray won the HD disc format battle fair and square. I don't doubt downloads will at some point be what's common place (as it is with music), but there's still alot to be said about having a physical copy of movies. Maybe I'm old school that way, but I still like having a disc, box and box art to my movie collection. I was also on the HDDVD bandwagon at first, but eventually I just wanted one to win so that I can finally jump onboard the HD movie bandwagon. So here we are with Blu-ray and I admit that I think Sony needs to do more to promote the format...but it seems they've been a bit lazy (or non motivated) ever since they won the battle.
As for this player, I personally prefer the PS3. Now if they sold these standalones for half of what they charge now, then I would say it's a good buy. But for not much more, the PS3 is a much better player. It operates faster (because of the cell processor, you don't have long wait times for the disc to play or menu functions), it's for the most part future proof and has an NVIDIA graphics engine for video processing. NVIDIA purevideo technology has been in constant development for years and they're also ISF certified so they definitely focus on high video standards. For what you pay for a PS3 and everything you get, it is hands down the best Blu-ray player you can buy at this price range. But if these standalones ever get cheap, might be a good bedroom player for me.
