It seems strange to me that HD-DVD players are so much cheaper. I think Sony better start lowering their prices or lose the format war.

Who's going to be stupid enought to buy this? Maybe m0f0 and milf_hunter? I mean the brand new 40gb PS3 is only $300 and PS3 is by far the best Blu-ray player right now. Why save just 40 bucks on refurb standalone player?

Amazon just sent me a $50 coupon for having bought a HD-DVD player from them before 2/23/08. That helped ease the pain. Now, to choose a Blu-ray machine...

#2: So you don't have to play your movies on a game console like a loser.

Except that PS3 is the fastest consumer HD player and has proven that it's the easiest to update with its firmware updates to BD1.1 and now BD0 #5 is dumb.

I don't see this on the Sony link, but I don't think this is HDMI '1.3'.

      That means old technology.

Yes, this is a first gen Bluray. A good machine, but cannot take advantage of some of the planned Bluray features that will come with newer profiles.

Where do you get the 5 free blu-ray movies? Think that is a very old promotion that expired like end of Jan.

Just get an upscaling DVD player. Sometime you can find HD-DVD players (Toshiba A2) for $50-$65. Buy one of those and use it as an upscaling DVD player. Screw SONY and BR.

Pricepoint would be $150.00 for a Sony BR player. The PS3 has better aesthetics than this unit, and as previous posts stated, much more functionality than a simple stand alone unit.
Movies still cost 30 to 40 USD, it shouldn't cost that much more to mass produce than normal dvds.
I'll use my Toshiba HD player for upconverting that I got for $65 and be happy and wait for a company like Apex to make one for $15.00.

I'm voting for Ralph Nader because he has promised to end the Format War and get our troops out.

Yeah, we got an up converting latest generation HD HDTV player with five more weeks for $129. My old $30 Woot Toshiba up converting player just had punked so now the Toshiba HD HDTV DVD player works as an up converting DVD player with a few Netflix HDTV discs on this side. Not a bad deal. And what has Apple started? -- $50 rebates from Amazon?
