This so-called "deal" clearly demonstrates that Sony is finally acknowledging their defeat at the hands of HD-DVD in the HD format war. Congratulations to Toshiba and HD-DVD on their well deserved victory. *smirk*

Or it's a sign that being competitive is the way you sell stuff now a days. HD-DVD players are now $200-$300 so it's no surprise that Blu-ray players are dropping down to that price range.

Even at $270, I wonder how many ppl get the $399 PS3 instead.

From what reviews of Blu-Ray players I've read the PS3 has the best PQ of them all. Doesn't say much for the other high priced players.

Bah,only buy if you "must" have a high def player. Wait for dual format players to drop in price. That way you don't have two players cluttering your AV area. As long as studios are exclusive to one format, both HD-DVD and BluRay will stay viable.

Mmm... looks like a decent deal anyway. Of course you can keep waiting forever. Price tmr will always be cheaper. At the end, when will you get something? Smile

Blew Ray - The Empire Strikes Back!

The way I see it, pick one of the crummy HD disc formats (HD-DVD or BlewRay) and you have a 50/50 chance of ending up with a pile of coasters in a few years. Spent $500 on HD versions of the same movies you already have on DVD? Too bad, they'll be in the 99 cent junk bin.

People who live in hope of "dual format" players are living in a fantasy world. Having to support both retarded formats means paying double the royalty costs. YES, manufacturers of HD/BR players have to pay royalties on every unit they produce. Eventually one format will become the defacto standard, so there's no point in paying 2x the royalty costs. Dual players are never cost competitive.

In theory, could Sony upgrade the PS3 to be a dual format HD player. That would be interesting.

The verdict is in and all of you are douche bag fanboys. Plastic media is stupid. Carry your movie collection around in a big wallet while I display my sheer intellectual superiority with a tiny memory drive containing every movie and song ever created from every planet of every galaxy in this infinite universe. Save yourself from a life of humiliation by visiting your nearest massive black hole now. If a stretchy death is not your cup of tea, there is also the glorious ball of hot freedom we call the sun.

Samsung has a dual format player. I don't know if that was just for tradeshow or it's out on the market already.

Unfortunately the format war is more than dvd-r and dvd+r war. Most people don't remember that format war with dvd was avoided when Philips and Sony agreed to go along with Toshiba in a compromise, which Philips dual layer was adapted along with Toshiba dual-side. Personally I found dual layer to be more useful than dual-side. But both Sony and Philips got screwed out of the original DVD deal, which explains why they are not willing to compromise this time.

Personally I hope HD format wins because I have invested a lot in the format already: picking up $99 player from walmart, and taking advantage of these BOGO offer. When amazon had the BOGO offer, HD titles were at most $27.95 (for combo set) and most were under $20. But Blu-rays are $27.95 minimum. Blu-ray hasn't produced a $99 player yet. Remember bestbuy had the Toshiba player for $90, so blu-ray cost 3 times more even with this sony deal. Had blu-ray came up with $99 player earlier, I may have picked blu-ray side.

Hah! You must be very poor indeed if you think that $99 is "a lot" to invest. I am suitably amused. *smirk*

Im gonna buy some laser tag guns. Ones gonna be blue ray and the other red..called the HD gun. Watch all the white folk walk around and play laser tag and call it patriotism. Red white and blue. Eventually they all turn red and white like the Japan flag.
