I might as well be the one to say it before some jackhole does...
Clear evidence that Blu-ray is winning the format war.

Sony lost tons of money by adding BR players to the PS3 thinking this would attract customers. Too bad they can't get any games for the system.

I do not know ... it is still going on ...

"Since this time last year, there's been some shift in the landscape of high-definition media. One of the most highly publicized changes was Paramount's decision to back off its Switzerland-like approach of offering its content on both formats and focus exclusively on HD DVD. The shift had a significant impact--at the very least on the perception of the format war, which up until that point appeared to be favoring Blu-ray."

No offense but the outcome is not clear yet. I, my self, have jumped the BLU-ray bandwagon and still I might end on the losing site ... Yep this is what it is ... my personal tragedy ...
But one thing is curtain - today is FRIDAY !

yep, i won't bother with either format right now. standard dvd works just fine right now. no kidding - i'll wait 2-3 years when they've finally decided what format, more titles come out, and prices plummet.

Buy both blu-ray and HD DVD...that way you don't have to worry about which one to buy....I have a PS3 which supports blu-ray, but i buy which ever movies cheaper...sometimes blu-ray are cheaper than HD, or vice versa.

I'm giong to have to disagree with ajrrftlmiami. I have both an RCA HD DVD player, and a PS3. I have many movies on both HD DVD and Blu Ray. My PS3 is a much more reliable player than the RCA. I haven't had a single problem watching any Blu Rays (including Die Hard 4). I have had many issues with the RCA player locking up, skipping, pausing, etc on movies such as Knocked Up, Children of Men, Smoking Aces, and it actually froze up watching a standard DVD of 24 the other night.

While I do enjoy having both, and being able to get all my movies in hi def, I feel that Blu Ray is the much better choice for the long run. However, I would not pick up this Sony player. Blu Ray is now switching over to profile 1.1 with Java support for added features which this player will not support. Get either the Panasonic DMPBD30K or the Sony PS3 in order to be profile 1.1 compliant.

With Blu Ray movies outselling HD DVD movies by approximately 3 to 1, Toshiba has had to slash their player prices and give away free movies in hopes to get more players in homes so they can stay alive. It appears to be working for now, but I'm not sure how much longer they can make it.

Paramount & Dreamwork just change their mind to support HD-DVD. Seems Blu-ray is on winning side.

      #9:
You are comparing a product made by Sony to a product made by RCA? RCA generally makes crap so you can't really compare the two. Buy a decent HD-DVD player from Toshiba then compare the two. Hope you bought an extended warranty on that RCA. You probably got a lemon.

#9, good luck with that RCA. BTW, the 70s called and they want their brand name back.

#12 Stole my post. RCA vs. Sony? That isn't a fair comparison. That being said, I plan on getting on the Blu bandwagon. Right now I'm deciding between 40 and 80Gb PS3. Any suggestions? I dont care about the free game on the 80... Backwords compatibility isn't a huge deal either.

From the trenches: Employees at a local video rental place told me that HDDVD skips much easier and that BR lasts longer. They've already gone through the life cycle of some HDDVD but the original BR are still alive and kicking. FYI.

Interesting find. Although I wouldn't call this a good statistical analysis based on the findings of one video rental store. I would think it would be the opposite since blue-ray has a thinner coat of resin on the disk than HD-DVD. Who knows. Maybe Sony put some special coating on their disks to make them more scratch resistance in lieu of the fact that there is a smaller space between the surface of the disk and where the data is stored.

#7, You just had to mention the word “work”

The Center for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly
contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by
      hand, and even electronically.

This virus is called "Weary Overload Recreational
      Knock Knock.
      Who's there?
      Bacon.
      Bacon who?
      " (WORK). If you
receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues, or anyone else via any
means whatsoever - DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private
      life completely.

If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises.
Go to the nearest grocery store and purchase one or both of the antidotes:

      1) "Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract" (WINE)
      2) "Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter" (BEER).

Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated
      from your system.

First of all for those of you that made comments about my player being an RCA, do some research. The RCA HDV5000 has the exact same internal parts as the Toshiba HD-A1 and HD-D1. Actually Toshiba builds every HD DVD player that has been released so far, and just puts them in different cases for the different compainies (including RCA, Onkyo, and Venturer). This is another reason why I don't see HD DVD sticking around long.

As far as Blu Ray discs lasting longer, yes they do. HD DVDs are pretty much the same as DVDs and scratch just as easily. But, because the data is compacted into a smaller area on the disc it means that scratch is more likely to cause problems than it would on a standard DVD. Blu Ray discs on the other hand have a new special hardened coating that helps protect them from getting scratched in the first place, and the coating seems to be working very well.

#11, where did you hear the Paramount and Dreamworks have changed their stance again? I check a few sites daily about info on Home Theater equipment and movies, and have heard nothing of that (although I would be very happy if it were true).
