In all honesty, would this be worth it?
I was debating between this and a Sammy / Panasonic 50' 720p Plasma TV for around 950.
Really think the extra four inches would be good, especially since I will not see a difference between 720p and 1080p (I own a PS3 but will not use it to watch Blu-Ray movies)
if you're not watching Blue-Ray, you won't notice the difference in resolution. I doubt 90% of people with 1080p display's notice any difference other than a placebo effect. If you are really into movies/gaming, then I would get a 1080p but at a larger screen size (e 50" +). At 46" you would have to have some pretty good vision to pick up the differences. The decision is up to you, but I would go for the larger real estate if it was up to me
In all honesty.. the Sony is definitely worth that amount. (Amazing price) Does that make it the right choice for you is the question.
Size for size.. Plasma uses quite a bit more electricity than an LCD set will. A plasma picture will also deteriorate over time. For those two reasons alone, I would get the LCD Bravia.
#1... go for the 50 foot Panasonic. I think Jerry Jones installed one of those in the new Cowboys stadium for way more than $950.
This TV is lot better than the one listed here for about $300 (since dell adds tax) http://www.jr.com/sony/pe/SObaconDL46Z4100B/

Thank you for all of the help folks! Very much appreciated.
unicron, I had a good laugh at my mistake
I would pass and wait for the led tv prices to come down and to come out.
@8 -> I presume you're referring to OLED? That is pretty retarded advice considering 1)they really haven't come out and 2) it will take a couple years (2-3yrs at least) for them to fall low enough in price to match current generation LCD/Plasma for the size.
I personally am a huge fan of late generation Panny plasmas. I picked up a 42" 720p model a couple months ago and the picture is awesome. Noticeably better than my friends 1080p LCD for watching DVD movies. My viewing distance is small (~7 ft). Go with the 50" if your viewing distance is anywhere from 8ft and beyond. I hardly doubth you will no the different and will appreciate the extra real estate.
I have Bravia v series, very glad I choose it. this price is very low,
Agree with #8 RGB LED LCD will much much better but agree with #9 either, we will wait about 3 years price will drop to 1 K.
Who doesn't have LCD just grab this one .
Samsung's blow away sony

If you are looking for a 46" LCD (I was limited by my entertainment center size) then this should be a top choice.
http://www.ecost.com/Detail/TV/Sharp/LC46SE941U/41807185.aspx?navid=155439616
On e-cost.com they have a Sharp Aquos for $849 (I got it when it was $975) before shipping which is about another $120 more. The thing about this model is that it does not come with the stand or speakers. I contacted Sharp about this and the stand is an extra $130 shipped and the speakers are $150 shipped. I am setting up a surround sound system so I have no need for the speakers anyway. Otherwise it is the exact same as this model:
http://www.amazon.com/Sharp-Aquos-LC46SE94U-46-Inch-1080p/dp/B00121U2O0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240334848&sr=8-1
According to the Sharp employee this is the best model in their 46" line. I am very pleased with it. As far as peoples problems with e-cost, I have no idea cuz I have ordered a lot from them and have never had a problem.
Best of luck
I just had to say something about #2,
you have no idea what you are talking about.
Advice to everyone buying tvs:
1)select your technology and i believe LCD is the way to go! Plasma Booooo
2)determine the screen size based on how far you'll be seating away from it.
3) 120Hz ! dont get anything with out this support. instead of buying 60 hz lcd, you might as well just buy an old tube tv. same quality. 120Hz is something to get use to. Picture quality is amazing. Hook it up to Verizon FIOS tv and just forget about blu-ray. nothing can compare to FIOS tv.
4) 50,000 contrast ratio is MINIMUM!
5) select brand that cares about their product, dont just overpay for the name. dont get me wrong, sony makes some good tvs back in 80s and 90s. Samsung is the way to go. Style, design .... unbelievable!
if you do not believe me, just go to best buy and see for yourself. above described is Samsung LN46A850. better see once for yourself then read over and over about it.
S
I do not work for Verizon or Samsung, just regular consumer
If it not 120hz its not worth it!
