Sony has the refurbished Sony Component Home Theater System HT-CT100 for $240 - $90 off with coupon code SONY30710CT100 [Exp 3/13] = $150 with free shipping. This system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing a center speaker and subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact package.
I sampled this and its big brother at the local electronic stores and was sorely disappointed in the maximum sound output... plus, some frequency seemed to be missing, which allowed the high frequencies from the bar to sound completely separate from the sub.
I settled actually on the Vizio VSB-210WS and am still impressed with the crisp sound output and the flexibility of moving the wireless sub-woofer to anywhere in the room. The only draw backs for the vsb210ws, is only 3 inputs (2 analog RCA and 1 optical), in addition this version does not do any DTS or Dolby Digital decoding, so those audio streams need to be decoded into pure PCM audio streams by your player or the tv. The new version, coming out in April, will have at least Dolby Digital included. The current Samsung and Sony models do have these decoders. I was surprised that I ended up picking Vizio over both Samsung and Sony (most others were out of the price range), but I am still happy with my decision everytime I listen to the Vizio soundbar! Google vsb210ws for reviews on it.
Slap a "SONY" or "BOSE" label on any speaker, crank up the volume to ~70 db - almost everybody will go "WOW"..regardless of how crappy it really sounds.. unfortunately most people look for high levels of bass and treble, nothing else- that's where Sony comes in, turning plastic into cash..Sony has been making some of the worst *entry level* audio systems for the past decade, so bad that they might as well join hands with Bose. Really, if you want a good system close your eyes and buy yourself a home theater with DAMN FLOOR SPEAKERS IN THE FRONT from respectable brands like Klipsch, Definitive, etc. The subwoofer- satellite design is severely flawed, there is no argument about that.
wtf.. some comments on here are bacon challenged. of course you can find something better than this sound bar, but for 150?! i think not.. i have this sound bar and its freaking awesome. i got it brand new though, but getting this for 150 is a great deal.. just get it! check all the online reviews about it, nothing but good things to say, like cnet.
you are right #8...both sony and bose does produce crappy sound but one thing that i gotta givem' props is for producing such nice looking products...i guess most of your money spent on those systems went into their design instead of sound...and yes there are better systems out there that cost far less and also sounds great...fyi i just bought another one of these systems at midnightbox - http://midnightbox.com and yes it does produce superb sound...this is my 2nd unit.
I have one, as a sound bar it's better than many built in HDTV speakers, and for me ended muddy speach. The newer more expensive model Sony HTCT500 is a considerable improvement.
FYI the CT100 did pretty well with a rear wall to bounce off, but when I moved it upon getting the CT500, to a more open plan room it definately was much less impressive.
Down the line I'll get a 5.1, and I've had crappy Sony sound systems before (how do you tell friends their overpriced Bose sucks). But these sound bars serve a niche.
I also have a Zvox, but the sound bar with subwoofer is of course better.
Just bought this last week for $246, figures.
And? Any good?
I just set one of these up at a friend's place. It sounded pretty good for the size and is a bargain at this price.
I brought this Sony refurb and it's okay. The Sub doesn't shake the house or anything but it's worth $150.
This thing is kickin and is all anyone needs. Screw all that other high $$$ bullshit
OOS
