Sony has the refurbished Sony Component Home Theater System HT-CT100 for $190 with free shipping. This amazing system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing a center speaker and subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact package.
You might want to read up on how soundbars work. They bounce the sound for the back around the room so it's supposed to hit you from behind. However a good soundbar system has to be tweaked just right, and your seating position has to be some distance from the wall behind you. This can give you the illusion of surround sound at a cheap price without having to run wires and mount speakers though.
I take my previous statement back in regards to this unit. This unit is not a surround sound system, as it is just 1 It will give you better sound than a 2.1 system though (more than likely).
i had this before we decided to go with a crazy home theater. this was very simple and sounded good. better than tv speakers and doesnt take up a lot of room
I still have the Altec Lansing ADA105 (ProLogic AC3 sound baby) that I purchased in 1998 and it sounds great. I love watching the D-Day invasion on Band of Brothers or the big bank robbery at the end of Heat. These sound bar/sub combos are great for your second TV or the TV in the den. Sure, it's not going to be as good as full fledged surround sound setup but it won't cost you as much.
A sub and "soundbar" doesn't seem to quite be "surround sound"
