I have a Canon S5 IS. Is this Sony worth the cost to upgrade?

#1...the question is do you want a dSLR or a superzoom like your S5? if you just want to point and click away, then stick with the S5. if you want full control over each shot, and spend a small fortune on lenses to fit your shooting style, then a dSLR is the way to go.

Sears has this at $499 now.

SoccerMomLuv is right -- there's a lot of difference between
      a point-and-shoot and an (D)SLR. If you're considering the
DSLR, my recommendation would be to see if you can rent a
used one from a camera store for a month. See if you like
the basic features and functionality. See if you like the
      weight and feel.

No doubt -- an (D)SLR will give you results far and away
better than a point-and-shoot. But they're bigger, heavier,
and more expensive. Some people just don't want that, and
are willing to take photos that are just snapshots.

I have a Canon D50 DSLR, I dont use it for the control option. I use for it just point and shoot because it does not have any delays shutter when taking pics like reg digital cameras. I must say even though i use it as just point and shoot, it is worth every bacon double bacon burger!

Plus with the $499 deal at sears, you also get $130 off of a telephoto lens if you buy the two together. Or you can get the older a100k version on clearance for $450 after the 10% coupon for clearance cameras. These cameras get great reviews.

DSLR cameras are great, but you need to know what you're getting into. The camera is ONLY $500. However, you'll likely buy another lens or two (at least $50-$100 each). You might get a lens filter (polarizer, clear filter, etc. for $20-$50 each).

DSLR can get very expensive very quickly. I sometimes compare it to a Wii. In order to really enjoy the Wii, you'll need to buy some games and extra peripherals.
