Barnes & Noble has the Sony PSP Core Handheld System for $170 + $5 shipping - 20% off using PayPal = $140 shipped. The picture they are using is that of a PSP original, however they are probably going to ship you a PSP Slim. Features a 4.3" full color 16:9 TFT screen, stereo speakers, 3D graphics engine and wireless capabilities. [BizRate]

Good price, but "probably they'll ship you the PSP slim" makes me uncomfortable.

That's true. I always see more kids with DS than PSP.

i prefer PSP over DS. With modified firmware I can do a whole lot more with the PSP than the DS, for considerably cheaper.

It says ships from Gamestop. So can I return this to GS if it ends up being a phat PSP?

Bought one of these recently using a $10 Best Buy coupon. Now that it's slimmed down and there are 4GB and even 8GB memory sticks readily available, this makes a nice portable video player. I'm taking HD .dvr-ms files recorded using MCE, stripping out the commercials with DVRMS Toolbox, then transcoding them to PSP format using Visual Hub on a Mac. The quality even at the default settings is excellent. Call this a poor man's iPod touch with a removable battery and bigger screen. I can shrink an entire football game down to around 1-1.5GB.

Now if those rodeo cowboy at Sony would just replace the UMD drive with a hard drive, this product would be near perfect. Oh and while I'm at it, how about bringing the GPS accessory to North America also?

The new slim PSP has taken over the sales lead from the DS in Japan since coming out...

Playstation Magazine which I guess now is owned by Sony had this report in it...They were happy for a moment sales of PSP went up...So it's probably a little bit biased..

Personally I can't stand the DS so I'm glad to see PSP picking up a little steam..

#4 - The PSP never passed the DS in terms of total units sold, as the DS was released months before the PSP. The PSP did exceed the DS in weekly sales for a few months after the PSP hit the market, but sales weakened and the two consoles were neck and neck for the '05 holiday season. In early 2006, the PSP seemed to be pulling ahead of the DS, but the launch of the redesigned DS Lite caused DS popularity to skyrocket and it has left the PSP in the dust ever since.

And RE: #13 - according to VGChartz the new PSP did take the lead in Japan for three weeks, but then fell back to sub-DS sales. On the plus side, PSP sales are still twice what they were before the launch of the slim model two months ago. On the minus side, in Europe the slim PSP sales bump was much smaller than in Japan, while in the Americas it was almost nonexistent.

They have the Star Wars special edition as well. It would be $160 after the Pay Pal 20%. Seems like a better deal to me.

PSP still is the best portable game system out there. If you compare all the games that PSP has over DS Lite, then PSP definitely rules. If only PSP made a touchscreen version, you can say DS Lite would fall tremendously in sales.

i still cant believe that barnes and noble would carry the psp system. Going to the store, the most electronics i ever see them carry are movies, music, and earphones
