The thing I like about e-books is that the large print weighs the same as a regular edition.
The e-book market has to discover the joys of DRM the same way the music industry did, all over again. Which vendor do you want to temporarily rent from, keeping in mind they don't have to go bankrupt to stop supporting you. Remember the failures of Wal-Mart and Microsoft? OTOH, which monopoly middle-man do publishers trust to not dictate prices and percentages?

At least Baen slow-roasts all their e-books in an anti-neutron warp core. It dries all the entropy out, leaving a truly durable work.

    #'s 1&2 - Equal "not too bright".

I have the Sony 605 and other than not having a background light for dark reading, I am pleased. A portable library (I have around 2k books on it) is pretty nice. I have text books, and a variety of enjoyment/enrichment reading books available where ever I go.

I also bought a $35 book cover that has an incorporated reading light.

about refurb: i would have a problem with a refurb because to one person a "cosmetic" scratch on the screen doesn't technically prevent the device from functioning, but sure lessens customer satisfaction (like an lcd panel with a half dozen bad pixels in the middle of the screen). if there's not an easy way to preview/exchange/return it, then its too great a risk.

about ebook reader: i'm waiting for wifi-only nook to drop below $150, either due to closing out current model when next model/upgrade is released, refurbished unit, or continued price-war with amazon. the nook, as it is based on android, is already developing a mod community to root/jail-break and add android applications to it. think: ebook reader with cheap tablet capabilities.

about drm: oreilly (you know, the publisher of technical books primarily with animals on the cover) sells drm-free ebooks (pdf, epub, etc). they are usually pricey (80% of dead-tree price, though i thought printing and distribution was 80% of the dead-tree cost, so shouldn't an ebook cost 20%), but oreilly has the "deal of the day" (http://feeds.feedburner.com/oreilly/ebookdealoftheday) where they sell a particular ebook for $10 and several other perks (eg download any previously purchased ebook in any format at any time, buy 1 get 1 free, 40-50% off new ebook edition if you have previous edition).

#5/6 - Consider the doughnut load of money you will continue to pay for the reading materiel.

I couldn't read all the books I have now in my life time. And I won't spend another penny in the future. Buy a wi-fi/subscription ebook reader? You'll be paying for a life time.

huh? "continue to pay"? "paying for a lifetime"? nothing i spoke of was subscription-based.

the wifi-only nook requires no recurring fee or even barnes & noble's continued existence to read any non-drm books. the cellular nook has free at&t cellular network access for the lifetime of the device, but presumably depends on neither b&n or at&t going out of business. irregardless, i can't justify the additional cost just to be able to buy/access drm books away from home (i don't travel that much or that impulsive of a reader).

the oreilly ebooks are drm free and once you buy them, you can immediately download them (in every available format) and kiss oreilly goodbye. or if oreilly adds new ebook formats in the future, then you can download your previously purchased ebooks in the new format for free. that's a free service and requires no subscription. yes, oreilly has a stake in safari bookshelf, which is a subscription-based online reading library, but i don't know if its website is even compatible with the nook browser.

so i'm confused what i previously said that you interpreted as being subscription-based (which i nearly abhor as much as drm, except for short-term/temporary reference needs).

Sorry for not being more specific #8.

The reason why most people buy wi-fi ebook readers is to download from subscription sites.

My point is I am not tied to the internet for content purposes. I already have a ton of content, and will not have any further costs.
