So, this is a deal? I'm not sure how.

You can get a much, much faster GeForce 9600GSO(768mb or 384mb, do not buy the 512mb one) for around $50. Or, go even cheaper and get a Radeon 3850 for around $40, that card is still far faster than this one.

You'll run out of gpu power before you can fully utilize that 1 gb.
Kinda like fitting a prius with Formula 1 tires.

A lot of people fall for marketing gimmicks ..the advantage of buying a faster card is not only seen in games but also in 2d environments like windows. When I upgraded to the HD 4850 from a Geforce 6600 with 512 mb ram, I found noticeable increases in response times of Windows besides smoother website scrolling and better overall site experience. And yes, with power hungry OS's like Vi$ta you simply cannot find slower cards sufficient.

Of course, if you're running a smaller monitor like a 19" then the difference may be less obvious but for something like a 24" you need all the power you can get.

#5: for $50, your best bet is the 9600GSO(don't get the 512mb version).

    here's a link: http://www.frys.com/product/5837943

Or, go for the Radeon 3850, which also currently costs $50(it was on sale for $40 recently).

If you really aren't going to do any gaming, you don't need to get a $50 gaming card. There are cards that cost $20 that have 2 DVI ports.

This is a not a worthy card to spend your $ if you really are only considering a 9500GT. There are other GT's with DDR3 from class act AIB's that are around $40; just pick up the shipping. The upside of this series is the lower PSU requirement for those with mediocre 12V AMP rails. While this is fan-less it does have a two-slot extruded H-S.

The ATI 4650 series will provided a little more in way of spec's and oomph than a 9500GT, still neither is a gaming card. Something with the same low power requirement and proficient gaming performance, look at the 4670's they won't need the 6-pin. Cool

This 4650 is with DDR3 and has multiple output connectors and fan but with shipping it's $60.

While with DDR2 and a nice Heat-piped two slot cooler on this Powercolor is right at $60 delivered.

#10: no, it's about the same speed, maybe slightly faster.

In any case, this is not a good price for this card. In case you haven't noticed from all the above posts, everyone recommends not buying this card.

If you'd like a card that is significantly faster than your current one for around this price, get the GeForce 9600GSO for $50, or get the Radeon 4830 for $65.

Or, wait a couple weeks and get the Radeon 4770 for around $60-70.

If your PSU 12V rail has the amps to support the GSO or 3850 those are good choices. If you have less the 20amp output or other/extra greedy components you should stay in the ATI 4600 series unless you think a PSU upgrade is in the budget. If you're really looking for native 2x DVI-D connectors most of the 4670's are configured that way.

True you can drop into a dual DVI-D 3650, if PSU is not adequate to support the amp requirement? For like… $31 and shipping like your DVI search shows.

At that point it's an equation of diminishing returns, and probably not any better than what he's got.

thanks for all the advice. i have a decent 550 watt ps with two 12v 18amp rails. I do also have a6 pin pci-e connector as well.

my only concern with getting a lower end board was that i am going to run two 24" monitors at 1920x1200 plus do the HD video editing and general use.

That said, and taking into account your advice, are the ATI 4650 or 9600GSO the best choices?

If you ask me there are too many brands repackaging the same basic chipsets which aren't named intuitively.

Some great discussion being volleyed-about right there.
The one point to make is there are less free shipping deals in these lower margin cards. If you have shipping to add, those decent prices evaporate. This 9500GT might have been $57 as Newegg can have some strange differences in their rates. Sometimes $5.99, 6.99 or even 7.99 and it has nothing with the cost of the card or package size. It's just Newegg making back there margins. I hate that they don't list the shipping anymore at least the continental US as a fix price.

18 - A lower end board should do fine pushing those in 2D, actually it probably does not make an impact for 3D environments. The one thing I consider is if you are on a 64-bit Vista OS would the extra memory on the card benefit his higher Res dual monitor set-up? Anyone have an estimation on that? The GSO might good as you can't go wrong with high memory bandwidth. That 3870 for $60 has close to double the bandwidth and stronger all around.
