    Single core Atom is a bit slow for even a basic server.

    Depends on what you're basically serving. A low volume webserver, fileserver, is easily within the performance of an Atom. Add software raid 5 and gigabit ethernet or server-side scripting then yes, Atom starts to look a bit anemic.

    dual core atom for 30 bucks more is a much better deal. Realtek Ethernet drivers can be a little finicky with these. But I have a couple working as phone servers plugging along nicely.

    I have a dual core atom as my whs box and it's great. Probably worth the $30 for the second core for general purpose serving.
