For this money you could build yourself an incredible server on your own from scratch, or just re-use some old parts and make a doughnut kicking FreeNAS system.
Synology make great NAS product running on linux. Very stable and quiet and SMALL. Better than Windows Server. Keep in mind this device does more than store your data you can host multiple webpages, multiple email accounts, multimedia, mobile app support, squeezebox, etc.
