Amazon has the Synology DS412+ Diskless 4-bay All-in-1 NAS Server for $600 with free shipping. Features a dual core 2.13GHz processor, 2x USB 3.0 ports and 2x 10/100/1000M ports. Normally $635 or more.
The 413 model is $500, has only one gigabit port and a lesser CPU. It is a fair bit of work to get benefit out of 2 gigabit ports, and feeding 2 clients a split 1Gb each would be bottlenecked by the RAID before the network. Oh, and AFAICT, you cannot use USB 3.0 drives as part of a RAID, they can only be used as their own little shares or for direct to/from NAS transfers.
Synology is generally regarded as the top of the less-than-real-server kit. I would love to get one larger than 4 bays at less than $120/bay. Gotta have some money left for drives.
