Amazon has the Takara Kabuto Single Speed Road Bike in 54cm or 57cm for $190 with free shipping. Features a tig-welded steel frame, alloy wheels, 700x32 tires, side pull brakes and a flip flop hub.
Don't really want to spend any extra time heading on down to the bike shop to see if there might be better bike with higher quality parts for about this price? Only going around the neighborhood, 3-4 laps around the park, up and down a few small hills, maybe 8-10 miles... 2-3 times a week, you know, for exercise and fun. Want a recommendation on another bike in this price range (±5%) that looks as good, as easy to set up, same features, etc?
Easy... there's this Mongoose Detain 700cc Men's Street Bike that says; perfect for street riding and has an Aluminum frame. Heck even total shipping weight box and all (in pounds): 26.43 that's 3.5 Lb's than then this Takara Kabuto with tig-welded steel frame which Amazon indicate the bike weight (only) is 30Lb's. So how much less the Aluminum frame bike is minus the the box maybe 2.5Lb's...
I LIKE going to the local bike shop, looking at what's available. Not necessarily to buy there as I'd just be paying extra for assembly and their adjustment program, but for example it gave me a good feel for whether what I thought I wanted was worth more or less. Doesn't compare to a friend letting you try their bike but before making a $200+ purchase it's nice to see what a manufacturer is doing any given year and then you can buy something online for less money while also being more informed.
Don't have the time to visit a bike shop? Then you probably don't have the time to ride the bike either. I do buy misc trinkets from the local BS to help support them, don't want to see yet another situation were walmart puts everyone else out of business.
Take a look at your local craigslist. there are a bunch of folks with "real" bikes that they purchases with the same intentions as #1 thinking if they spend enough, they would be compelled to ride. Wrong. So they are dumping a nearly new bike that might have cost 500 for anything they can get. Bikes looses their value faster than cars (except some custom jobs).
Depending on your physical condition, a single speed might look trendy, but it is not for the newbie. Or replace a rear cog with something bigger (less physically demanding).

Depends on what time period you're talking about. An almost brand new bike does suffer a big drop in value, but a quality 6 year old bike (not abused or banged up, no rust) may still be worth 2/3rds the price paid and unlike with a car it's not so easy for there to be hidden flaws on a bike (assuming you're allowed a test ride).

Yes, totally agree! However I was attempting to satisfy a very narrow minded criteria.

It's amazing that guys that have no problem spending $200 on a hard drive and $500 on a camera wrangle with spending $200 on a bike. Com'on man!

I would rather have a Retro Moped, I love the smell of 2 stroke in the morning! Booyah
Check if Alberto Contador still needs his bike.
