More expensive than my own solution: (1) small earbuds (preferably "noise-isolating: - that is, with a silicone or rubber ring that seats in your ear canal & seals out external noise; and (2) saftey ear muffs that REALLY seal out external noise. You look like Princess Leah, but it works, and you don't lose audio spectrum like people complain about with active noise cancellation systems.

No, I don't look iPod-stylin'. But it works -- actually, it works GREAT. On airplanes, I can just use the ear muffs to sleep whenever I wish. Air gets in/out so there's no pressure problems (either with the muffs or earbuds). And I can keep the volume as low as I would normally keep it in a noiseless room, it's that good.
Saves my ears & saves my wallet & sounds better than the most expensive pair of noise cancelling phones. Downside: may screw your chances with the cutie sitting next to you. Upside: you won't be conned into dinner & a movie for a peck on the cheek.
