I'm looking at ditching the cable and installing something like this in the attic, then using the existing cable to run it to the basement. The maps put me like 12 miles from every antenna in town, with a direct line of sight.

Thoughts on picking up one of these vs. building my own out of coat hangers and such? Do I need repeater things of some kind to amplify the signal and get it from the attic to the basement (40 feet of cable maybe?).

I've found indoor antenna's not that good anymore now that everything's gone digital. You need a very strong signal or atmospherics will kill the signal and break it up. I'd invest the money as a down payment on an outdoor antenna.

$26.49 at Amazon and no tax for most. If you have prime, would have it in 2 days. I guess the price is average.

I tried this antennae and the $99 external one that is about 3 feet long and 6 inches wide. Neither of them picked up all the stations.

I build one of the ones i saw on YouTube that is external and it works great. We have two locations of antennas on two opposite mountain tops and i get stations from both and they are very clear. The cable into the house is over 40 feet and i have no repeater and signal booster either.

I'm an executive at a cable company, and it pisses me off when people say "cut the cable"

Well tomasSC, get used to it. I "Cut my Cable"- Charter pipeclog btw, which was bleeding me dry for nothing but problems, crappy "digital" broadcasts with ghosting and useless filler channels.
Using an amplified HD antenna and can pick up 16 local stations for free as well as 3 or 4 other stations on a good day.
So, yes sir, mr. big cable exec, I hope lots of other people "cut the cable".
    Respectfully,
    YJ

Make sure you pick up AMPLIFIED version of this antenna. It's $10 more but makes a world of difference
