I have this. It gets good reception, but it is directional. It's little annoying because I have to point it at different directions to get certain channels.
Good to know thanks, I didnt know how these worked exactly.

When I upgraded to HD on DirecTV, I told them I needed a rooftop antenna for local reception because I am 30 - 45 miles away from the transmitters. The installer installed a DB2 UHF antenna and I was ready to chew his butt, when he showed me the reception. It was great, even though the antenna doesn't look so good. It is stowed behind the TV and isn't visible, so I didn't care. So if you can hide it, a DB2 or DB4 UHF antenna may be the cheapest and best alternative. I needed local reception when DirecTV was unavailable during heavy cloud cover, snow and rain. Although the HD dish and receiver seem much better than the old ones.
