RadioShack.com has the Thermaltake BlacX USB Docking Station for $30 - $15 rebate [Exp 12/2] + $0 shipping = $15 shipped after rebate. Slam your hard drive into it to make it into a USB external hard drive. Check out this quick look at how it functions.

Does anyone have one of these? I always wondered how well it works compared to a normal enclosure.

Not bad if you regularly mess with hard drives etc. Wouldn't want to have it as a primary enclosure though.

Personally I would prefer a simple USB->SATA cable so that it would take up less space when stored.

ugh, i'm so confused on what I should do Sad
I need a external enclosure for my old ps3 HD but have a hard time deciding on a case. I don't want it to crap out on me and i'm easily swayed by negative reviews and comments as well as positive review and comments Sad
I was goin to get this on newegg for 24 but it sold out and now it's $15! AWESOME BUT I read one review on newegg mentioning that this rebate company is a joke on actually giving you the rebate. I'd hate for that to happen. hm....

eSata should become the standard for non-RAID external hard drives, enclosures, and docking stations like this one for two reasons: 1) 480Mbips for USB 2.0 vs 3Gbips for esata 2) quality control has been quite poor in USB devices such as USB hubs.

#5 if the base it too small it will be easy to fall down and someone will complain about the product too.
eSATA definitely should be the best solution. However the BlacX eSTA/ USB version cost about $40. It is more than 2 times expensive than this unit. So for now, I can settle on this unit and wait for the deal for the eSATA version. This kind of product as not much technology involved- I bet there will be a lot similar product come out in the market,

Get the sata enclosure that goes into the 5.25 bay instead. Lot faster , takes up no external space and the direct sata interface is a lot faster than the usb.
It's an absolute no-brainer. Why would you want to use usb when you could use direct sata instead?

These things are awesome, but make sure you read the specs if you plan to read with 1TB-and-up drives, different brands have different max capacities

#16- Thank you for your suggestion. I did checked the unit you mentioned before I make up my mind on BlacX. But the reason I choose BlacX over IstaruSA is
1)BlacX USB port support plug n play and IstarUSA doesn't. That means if you need to swap the HDD with the IstarUSA unit you have to power down the whole system. The enclosure did not and cannot add a power switch to turn the unit off because this is no hotswap or plug n play capability. That's really wasting time. I really don't think that unit support hotswap insn't it ? The Hotswapable one starts at $25 and this BlacX is only $15
2)BlackX is more portable than the IstarUSA unit. I thik thar's why BlacX eSATA version also come with USB port. That gives the BlacX eSATA version more option and also more flexible.

But eventually I perfer to get the hotswap unit like: iStarUSA BPU-340SATA Aluminum Black 3 to 4 Bay HDD Hot-Swappable SATA Enclosure

Or if you prefer one driver unit like iStarUSA T-7M1-SA
