RadioShack.com has the Thermaltake BlacX USB Docking Station for $30 - $15 rebate [Exp 12/2] + $0 shipping = $15 shipped after rebate. Slam your hard drive into it to make it into a USB external hard drive. Check out this quick look at how it functions.

A friend of mine has a similar one with both eSata and USB and the eSata is much much faster than the USB (which is all this model has). If you've got a big drive you want to "slam" into this something like this, make sure it has the eSata connections otherwise expect it to be slow.

just tried googling "worldwiderebates" and google suggested I try,"worldwiderebates scam" before even hitting the search buttong. This is making me feel iffy about my purchase and considering canceling before they charge me. It seems worldwiderebates (according to reports on rip-off report) likes to give you the run-around and accuses you of not sending in all the necessary items to qualify for the rebate even if you did.

UGH, #22 the rebates DOES kill it . I'm canceling my order.

EDIT: F#%! can't cancel as the "cancel button" is no longer an option, interesting...

#16- Thank you for your suggestion. I did checked the unit you mentioned before I make up my mind on BlacX. But the reason I choose BlacX over IstaruSA is
1)BlacX USB port support plug n play and IstarUSA doesn't. That means if you need to swap the HDD with the IstarUSA unit you have to power down the whole system. The enclosure did not and cannot add a power switch to turn the unit off because this is no hotswap or plug n play capability. That's really wasting time. I really don't think that unit support hotswap insn't it ? The Hotswapable one starts at $25 and this BlacX is only $15
2)BlackX is more portable than the IstarUSA unit. I thik thar's why BlacX eSATA version also come with USB port. That gives the BlacX eSATA version more option and also more flexible.

But eventually I perfer to get the hotswap unit like: iStarUSA BPU-340SATA Aluminum Black 3 to 4 Bay HDD Hot-Swappable SATA Enclosure
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121913
Or if you prefer one driver unit like iStarUSA T-7M1-SA

#19, you don't have to power down the system to remove the drive. This usb enclosure does not have a power switch either - in both cases you simply unplug the hard drive whenever you want..as long as the os is not writing anything to it, you should be fine.

so, this thing can hold a 2.5"/3.5" type of HD. Cool but most of my old HDs are IDE/PATA drives

    1) BlacX does have a on /off switch on the back. You should disconnect USB device them power it off by switch. And the IstarUSA one has no switch.
    2) There is no way you can safely pull a Hard disk out W/O hot swap design in there. Otherwise why people design something call "hotswap backplane" ? Hot swap backplane always use staged connector to controls the power and date ready signal together ( they are not just like normal IDE or SATA drive use separated power and data cables). Other wise people just get a long SATA power connector and long SATA cable then they can swap the drive when it is on and tell the sever hotswap backplane designer to drop dead.

I've been really turned off by rebates lately... news of rebate processors going bankrupt and all. Scared is the wrong word, but I prefer to keep my money in my pocket in stead of hoping it comes back like a boomerang.

guys, radioshack isn't letting me cancel my order online and the # is just automated messages, what should I do? They are giving me some bull about "your purchase is processing." I'm pretty sure it hasn't shipped so I don't see why they can't just cancel it and give me my money back?
