The only problem I have with this is that ZipZoomFly has, perhaps, one of the most convoluted purchasing schemes I've seen in a while: add to cart, click checkout, sign in, choose shipping, choose payment, process payment, verify shipping address, choose variations on shipping method, confirm purchase, done.

#6 I have several PATA HD (80-300G) sitting around (yank out of old machines)
It will be nice if they support both PATA & SATA.

#9...or anyone else with IDE drives.

I suspect the reason for this dock being only SATA is that the
SATA spec allows for "hot-swap", which is the same principle behind e-Sata (or USB for that matter).

IDE drives cannot be disconnected while powered up (unless you want a pile of paperweights in lieu of a hard drive)

I can see where they avoided a whole army of IDE-owning rodeo cowboy that can't be bothered to read the warning label and end up trashing their drive.

My only concern is for the heat generated by the drive. Inside the computer, the HDD is connected to the metallic frame so the heat is dispersed away from the drive.

But in the enclosure setup, the heat stays on the drive. Wouldn't this be really bad for the SATA drive eventually?

#16, thanks for posting. I can't believe why so many people are wondering why this is SATA only. And even if you only cold-swap, it'd only be a matter of time until the IDE pins get bent or even break off.

#17, the metallic frame inside a computer does nothing to cool hard drives. It is not like a heat sink--it would need to contact the top of the hard drive and have some thermal paste in between. Inside a computer is (usually) a lot hotter than in a person's room, so the drive should be perfectly fine. (Max operating temp for hard drives is usually around 60 deg C.)

    Right on, #18.
Also, this isn't a permanent solution for your external storage/enclosure needs. This is for those of us who have several SATA drives sitting around collecting dust, and just want to quickly back up/copy/move files on the fly, and turn it off.
If you are worried about heat, you need an actual enclosure - preferrably aluminum - that supports eSATA and USB 0 Obviously, better if cooling is provided by the enclosure.
    I recommend Antec MX-1.
