I actually have one of these as a replacement in an older HP. It works great for that purpose.
I do offer the following caveat: the amperage on each rail, especially the 12v rails, is low--in many cases below the minimum for newer hardware. You'll see it if you look closely at the specs (dig deeper than the watt rating). If you have a high end graphics card, high voltage memory, or a quad core you may very easily encounter weird random errors as a result of a rail becoming unstable when it can no longer supply the necessary power.
Well I'm in for one. My system dies yesterday. The beeps indicate a power supply but I have a feeling that won't really fix the issue. That said I 90% of the times I've had issues its the power supply....and I tend to by tier 1 brands....
