^ Opposed to what, pulling a trailer to haul the extra gear instead? Granted, on a SUV or truck with a hitch, a hitch rack should be more aero, or you could mount or strap this to a hitch rack.

True, but if you don't have an SUV and instead a station wagon or sedan, what choices do you have if you need more storage ?
A neighbor of mine has one and says that it's a lot easier and less finicky than the regular fiberglass rooftop "coffins". Something about the fiberglass ones being a bit more difficult to pack and still get the lid closed.
One nice thing is that you can stuff it full, then heave it up on the roof to strap it down.
