The exact same refurbished model is almost $30 cheaper directly from the TiVo site: https://www3.tivo.com/store/boxes.do?type=renewed

Yeah, a TV card is the same thing... except that you need a computer to plug it into.

My cable company charges $10 a month to rent a DVR, and it's not nearly as good as TiVo at even basic DVR stuff, let alone adding the ability to schedule recordings via my iPhone or play NetFlix streams.

#27, check your bill for a $15 cable box fee and a $10 DVR fee that would both disappear if you had a tivo.

I am so ready to get one of these.

I had a Tivo series 2, but I switched to digital cable and got the Scientific Atlanta HD DVR that Cox offers in my market.

The Scientific Atlanta is a royal piece of poo - it is very difficult, if not impossible, to find programs. It often doesn't understand what reruns are, so you have multiple copies of the same show (even though you said first run only), and it is generally sub par in every aspect of it's user interface. You can't program it remotely (via the web or phone). Also, I can't access or transfer media to and from my computer. Cox keeps saying they are about to upgrade the firmware, but I have heard that for about a year now and I'm not buying it.

Cox charges $11.99 for their DVR "service", $5.50 for their "digital gateway", and $5.25 for their "DVR" rental. In my market (OKC) they charge $1.99/mo for the cable card (required with Tivo HD) and a $30 install fee.

      So, monthly I am + 12.95 + 1.99 - 11.99 - 5.50 - 5.25 = -7.80/mo with an upfront cost of $208 (this deal) plus $30 = $238.

Also, I am dropping Blockbuster and getting Netflix. It is $3 less than the comparable 2-at-a-time blockbuster program with the in-store exchange option. No in-store exchange with Netflix, but they offer 1,200 movies through Tivo. I am also doing this because by dropping the Cox "digital gateway" I no longer get my HBO movies along with some free TBS, TNT, Sundance, etc, movies on demand. This will replace that nicely and save me $3 to boot! Plus, I won't have to go to the movie store to take movies back!

Oh, one more thing: Before Xmas, Tivo had refurbs for $179, now they are $199 Truncated]
