Since most people subscribe to cable or satellite. Why do people still pay for one of these and the monthly subscription? When you get the DVR from cable and Sat. for near free. And yes I know of the advanced function of Tivo over the basic box you get from other providers. My box from comcast does HD and SD and for the next year they pay(subsidized bill) me for having it.

I'm sorry you got comcast. Directv is the only way to live

Content is everything in cable vs. sat.

      TivoHD is awesome.

Directv should buy tivo at this point. Make it their inhouse dvr OS.

Hard to give up 70+ HD channels in MP4 and free 3 free hd dvrs

You can get these with a lifetime subscription from the TiVo web site if you are an existing TiVo customer:
      http://www3.tivo.com/tivo-promo/show.do?pg=/buytivo/hdgift.html

      It's $698.99 with a lifetime subscription.

#5 that may seem like a deal. But even when I was with Dish Network. I only paid $5 a month for the DVR. It would take a little over 9 years to make that payoff. And 9 years from now the technology will certainly be different, hopefully for the better. Will Tivo still be around, maybe, but they almost just recently went under due to all their competitors giving boxes to customers for near nothing.

I just don't see TIVO as being that great, based on price. I just want my show to be there when I want it. There are too many cheap ways for that to happen now.

If I wasn't a "Ghetto Dog", and money was growing on the tree's in my back yard maybe I could be a Tivo supporter.

Congrats to your success that you can be a fan. I know they are great devices that other boxes wish they could be like.

#6, actually, I was with Directv paying over $70 per month, switched to tivo with lifetime. Now i watch free OTA HD and make up the cost in less then 1 year.
I don't have Directv channels any more, but I have a great HD picture for network and I can live stream photos, music and video from my computer to my living room.

This is really a great product.

directTV HD sucks. the picture is aweful. now verizon fios, that's what i'm talking about. for the cost of the tivo you could practically build a decent HTPC and never have a monthly charge with the free software that is out there.

#4, DirecTV used to have Tivo as its main DVR OS. I still have a Tivo series 1 w/ directv. Well, had. I just cancelled because they broke it off with tivo a while ago, and now they only have their craptacular "we hate you" DVR's with horrible menus.

DirecTV made a huge mistake, Tivo series 3 w/ cablecards is the best. It is totally cable provider independent.

search for the AAA coupon if you are an AAA member. Then you can get an additional 10% off.

Got mine for $225 and it will be in tomorrow.

I just read that it has only 20 hrs recording time. You may want to factor in adding a hard drive to this price.

      Lifetime stays with the box.

There was a time when you could move the lifetime subscription, but that deal expired in early November.

I agree with post #1. How is Tivo still in biz? I just have the verizon fios dvr and it works awesome. I wish it had more hard drive space though.

"TiVo Product Lifetime Subscriptions to the TiVo service cover the life of the TiVo Digital Video Recorder (DVR) you buy--not the life of the subscriber. The Product Lifetime Subscription accompanies the product in case of ownership transfer."

so what if the DVR breaks after a year..or what ever the warranty is?

Tivo is sue happy. They are getting 93 million from Echostar for infringing on their digital video recording patent or (DVR). Their stock is up 30% is the last 2 weeks. Comcast will use the tivo in all of their boxes as their exclusive DVR service. Why? Because now that Tivo has won the suit against echostar there are rumers they will be suing all the other dvr makers as well. Comcast caught on and has just decided to merge instead.

This just doesn't add up. The monthly fees need to be less than the cable companies, and they aren't.
