Abt.com has the TiVo TCD758250 Premiere Elite 4-Tuner HD Digital Video Recorder for $399 with free shipping. Backordered 7 to 10 days. Record up to 4 shows at once, 2TB recording capacity *up to 300 hours of HD programming), streams music and photos from any home network, Netflix, Pandora, Hulu Plus access.
Besides the privilege of paying $400 you still have to pay the $15 (or more) per month subscription fee or the $300 lifetime fee. What a deal! Not buying a Tivo again until the prices are a little more reasonable.
I have no problem with the price of TiVo. You get a much better DVR than the cable provider and in the long run you save money (especially with the lifetime option). I think this model will continue to drop in price over time. But for a 4 tuner TiVo with a 2TB hard drive, it's not a bad deal. TiVo does a lot more than just record shows (you can copy movie collection, phots, and music to tivo, copy shows from tivo to your computer, watch netflix, etc)

Add a Ceton InfiniTV or HDHomeRun to your htpc. Works just like a DVR w/o the subscriptions fees (except for the cablecard rental).

I cannot understand why the service for the Series 4 boxes is much higher than the Series 3.
