What happened to the ability to just use them forever instead of paying the subscription?

TIVo is dead or for people that cannot face the fact that they invested in a now defunct product.

BallzNall, does that mean it is not dead to you? You wrote a sentence that means the exact opposite of what you intended to communicate- NICE! If what you say is true, isn't it also true that TiVo is alive and well for everyone that could face that fact?

Please use the same analytical skillZ that you used to write that sentence to also understand that a product cannot go "defunct". Products get cancelled all the time, regardless of the company's success or failure (for example, Windows XP). So you are not even able to communicate an irrelevant point.

Lastly, we bashed your stupid DISH DVR on the last TiVo thread until you shut up. You are still paying $15/month for that thing but you just don't realize it because it is wrapped into your cable bill. People who do not understand that are defunct.

#1 (and the ill informed #2): You're looking for a Series 1 Tivo (Philips HDR112/212/312 series).

They are old and somewhat slow, but they are easy to hack and will happily run as a "dumb" DVR (no guide info) without paying the overpriced monthly TiVo ransom.
