I have had a series 2 for about a year now and there is a lot of pixelization that occurs. I have read that this is a sign of a dying HD. Oh well.

Also, for some reason my series 1 menus seem "faster" than the series 2. Anyone know why?

#5 "BTW, if you have DirectTiVo looks like service will be over by the end of this year. I've been hearing rumors that the boxes will stop working in the next two months."

Where are you hearing this? Links?

How does mythTV work? Do you just use your pc as the dvr with mythTV?

I originally had the Series2 with single tuner and bought the dual tuner version at "Big Lots" a couple months ago ($69 - no rebate or activation fee involved; just transfered my original subscription). It's great. Tivo is very much worth the monthly fee as far as I'm concerned. I recently tried the ATT-Uvers package which was junk compared to TIVO.

Ive always thought about jumping on one of these tivo deals, but the subscription fees make me want to just get a tv tuner for the pc.

MythTV is no longer free for guide information. DataDirect (the "company" that was providing free data via Tribune Media Services) ceased service in early September.

They have been replaced by schedulesdirect.org, which charges a $20 annual fee for guide info. Compared to Tivo's $13/month its a he11 of a deal.

MythTV does turn your PC into a DVR. You'll need a tuner card (or two) and some serious storage, plus the above mentioned subscription for guide info.

FWIW -I'll stick with my free solution. A Series 1 Standalone Tivo without a Tivo sub (manual recording is possible with the S1SA) and the TV guide that comes with the Sunday paper. Total cost was the one time investment of $60 on fleabay for the box.

Too bad it's not HD. Last year CompUSA had these for free during BF.

I've seen several sites saying that tivo has dropped their pricing back down to $12.95/month and that they've brought back the lifetime subscription ($399). However, I can't find anything official on the latter.

I have had a Series 2 for about three years. Cost me $150 with a $150 rebate, and $13/month.

I wonder how many of the people who balk at the monthly fee happily pay $40/$50/$60+ to yap-yap-rabbit on their cellphones all day long...

It's a matter of value - the pittance that TiVo charges me is worth it to me. What I want, when I want it, pause live TV, skip through ads.

For me, it's more than worth it in time saved.

My series1 is still going strong. Even after hacking it pretty heavily. We also have an htpc that can record tv. But we never use it. The convenience of the tivo just can't be beat.

Thought sometimes our viewing habits confuse it and it records strange things. Like spanish soap operas.

#34, you must be a current TiVo subscriber and be adding an additional TiVo. offer is valid from now until 2/2/08. I would think once you get the lifetime for the new one, you could cancel the old one. $399 is alot, but that is not too bad if you think about e-bay that there they a e $700+ a TiVoHD with lifetime.
